10Gbps Li-Fi Transfer

A UK research group consisting of researchers from Oxford and Cambridge along with 3 of the top Scottish universities have succeeded in transferring 10Gbps of wireless internet using light.

The technology, nicknamed ‘Li-Fi’ has been achieved by using micro LED lights that transfer at 3.5Gbps through each of the primary colours – red, green and blue to make a white light transmission of over 10Gbps.

The project has been named The Ultra Parallel Visible Light Communications Project and has been funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

The constant strength, irrelevant of distance from router and the unlimited capacity of the electromagnetic spectrum suggest light could be a realistic source of data transfer in future years.
