The body which measures the perceived level of risks concerning British SME’s, the Zurich SME Risk Index, has recorded a rise in concern for the first time in over a year regarding cyber security.
In Q4 of 2013 the figure stood at 41.68 rising to 43.9 during Q1 of 2014. The results show that small and medium sized businesses are feeling more threatened than ever by cyber security threats. Of the businesses surveyed the majority of concerns sat in the privacy breach and data loss category, with 33% of companies recognising this as their number one concern.
With this in mind, businesses can reduce this risk and take the following steps to keep their company protected from these increasing cyber security threats:
Mobile Device Management
With more and more data being stored and accessed on smartphones and tablets, the need to protect mobile devices is getting greater and greater. Mobile Device Management (MDM) enables devices to be enrolled, configured, updated and secured from a central system.
A combination of corporate and personal devices used under company’s Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) schemes has seen an increase in the number of data breaches and cyber security losses following loss and theft of devices which are carried upon our person on a daily basis, inside and outside of our secure office and network.
Signal Networks Mobile Device Management can be applied to a whole host of operating systems including Android, Apple iOS, Mac OS, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Symbian and Windows to prevent threats to personal and corporate data.
Spam can affect the performance of our network and threaten the security of your company data. Signal Networks offer an effective Spam Filtering service which blocks 99% of spam emails, relieving strain on your server and blocking potentially thousands of viruses, spam, malware, spyware and phishing emails from reaching your employees inbox.
Along with a reliable spam filtering solution, a trusted antivirus also needs to be implemented to ensure that if vulnerability did make its way into your network though email or any other source that your network will not be compromised.
A strong firewall is essential to any network, be it at home or in the office. A strong network security policy is the first line of defence for any managed network fighting cyber security. Signal Networks managed firewall services are fully managed so that you can concentrate on what you do best, safe in the knowledge that your network is being constantly monitored and managed to the highest standards by our team of dedicated Information Security specialists.
All the above steps form a secure layer of protection around your server and data, however having your physical server located in your office can also add security risks. More and more businesses are turning to the cloud to host their servers, not only does this offer a secure hosting environment but redundancy and over heads are reduced and flexibility increased.
The benefits of hosting virtual servers in the cloud are being recognised by businesses worldwide.
