US based online cloud storage service Evernote has advised all users to reset their passwords following the discovery of a security breach.
Over the weekend Evernote announced via its website blog and also via email that a security breach had occurred in which unauthorised persons had attempted to access secure areas of the Evernote network. The company insisted that no evidence was present to suggest that attempts to access personal information were ever successful. They did however request a service wide password reset.
Despite no personal accounts being compromised, the Evernote network was and information stored on this network could have directly linked to passwords and usernames of service users. The passwords stored by Evernote are encrypted.
Evernote also advised all users to adhere to the following rules across all online mediums in order to stay best protected against similar attacks –
– Avoid using simple passwords based on dictionary words
– Never user the same password on multiple sites or services
– Never click on ‘reset password’ requests in emails – instead go directly to the service
