Google buys AI start-up company DeepMind

The London-based artificial intelligence firm DeepMind has been acquired by Google for an unconfirmed amount of £242 million in order to obtain the firm’s talent roster.

DeepMind are a ‘cutting edge artificial intelligence company’ who ‘combine the best techniques from machine learning and system neuroscience to build powerful general-purpose learning algorithms’ as mentioned on their website landing page. The company was co-founded by Dennis Hassabis, Jaan Tallin and researcher Shane Legg and claims to be backed by some of the most notable tech entrepreneurs of the last decade.

The acquisition is conveniently timed with the stewardship from Android co-founder Andy Rubin who is investing heavily in robotics companies (reasons why are unknown yet).
