In Flight Wifi by 2014

Ofcom, the UK communications regulatory body has held a conference to discuss the introduction of inflight Wi-Fi and hopes to offer the service by 2014.

The connections would be dependent on the use of a new aircraft satellite system, named ESOMP (Earth Stations on Mobile Platforms) which could also be adapted for use on ships and trains. If airlines decided to adopt the new technology on their carrier they could offer connectivity at 10 times the speed currently offered on some trains.

The proposed system has not been accepted or rejected yet but if the go ahead is given, the systems could be in place by next year.
