Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) has unveiled a revolutionary new program that allows its guests to use their Smart Phone as their hotel key. This means guests can bypass the hotel front desk check-in by using SPG’s mobile app, go straight to their room, swipe their smart phone over the lock and enter their room all without the need to stop at the check-in desk and ask for the room key.
SPG’s CEO Frits van Paasschen told The Wall Street Journal that he believes this new feature will “become the new standard for how people will want to enter a hotel.” He concedes that the idea might “be a novelty at first” but said he thinks “it will become table stakes for managing a hotel.”
The app will work on iPhone 4’s or newer models and Android phones running 4.3 or newer.
It’s unclear how SPG will make this app secure as past attempts to use this technology have had mixed results to date.
