Over 5 Million people have signed up to the Telegram Messenger application after it was announced last week that Facebook has bought WhatsApp. On the 24th February 2014, Telegram Messenger tweeted that they were ‘the number 1 most downloaded iPhone app in 48 countries.’
The boost in users (100 new users per second) has caused the application to require new servers and an urgent upgrade to its current hardware.
Telegram Messenger was developed by Nikolai and Pavel Durov, the two brothers behind Russia’s largest social network VK. The app allows its users to send messages, photos, videos and documents to people who are in their iPhone contacts. Whilst the brothers were born in Russia, the Telegram Messenger app is not connect to Russia legally or physically as the head office is based in Berlin.
The difference between WhatsApp and Telegram Messenger is that Telegram is a cloud-based and heavily encrypted app. As a result, users can access their messages from several devices (including desktops) and share an unlimited amount of data quickly and without any cost. The company prides itself on being open, trustworthy and free and allows anyone to check the source code, protocol and API.
