Microsoft has released the latest version of its hybrid tablet/desktop operating system, Windows 8.1.
The upgrade is available as a free download for Windows 8 users from the Windows app store and will offer a more user friendly experience on tablets as well as desktops and laptops.
The release of the software upgrade comes after a long wait, having first officially announced an upgrade for the controversial OS Windows 8 back in May. The new operating system sees changes and new features including the reinstatement of the start button that was removed on Windows 8 and caused a stir with devoted Windows users. Windows 8.1 also offers the option to use in ‘desktop mode’, completely removing the tiled metro menu designed for tablet use.
